This topic is perfect for nursery children just starting school. It focusses on themselves as individuals, what they like and don’t like and how to express themselves and how to take care of their bodies. It also covers emotions and friendships, learning how to play alongside each other in a new environment and feeling safe to share their own thoughts and ideas.

With so many recognisable pieces of iconography associated with pirates: ships, skulls and crossbone flags and buried treasure, it makes for a great theme to explore with EYFS children. By learning to associate images with words and themes, children can further experiment with more complex vocabulary and skills with image recognition.
This topic explores life in the water, meeting all the creatures under the sea, such as octopus, sharks, starfishes. It is another great opportunity to extend children’s vocabulary as well as imagination by exposing them to photos and videos of somewhere they have not been.
