Curriculum Intent
We aim to facilitate high quality MFL opportunities to appreciate other cultures and equip our children with the necessary tools to become confident speakers, readers and writers regarding our chosen language (Spanish).
We aim to challenge all pupils in their thinking and provide an environment in which learning can thrive.
Language can be a barrier because good communication skills are essential to understanding others.
It could serve as an ‘ice-breaker’ for unfamiliar individuals/groups. e.g. some people might be surprised that you are speaking their language, but it gives them a sense of pride and a show of respect for you that you’ve made the effort to learn.
EAL and English speakers start off on the same footing’ when learning.
Shows respect and tolerance as well as an appreciation for culture.
Summary of intended impact
Scheme of work
Hackney Primary Spanish enables skills to contribute to good:
It is also an ambitious scheme matched to the NC Programme of Study.
Find that the scheme is non-specialist friendly, which gives more confidence.
MFL lessons are matched to the NC and progression is tracked across all year groups using long-term/medium and weekly plans. Half-termly monitoring contributes to accountability and subject development.
Children are aware and hold an importance for the teaching of MFL (which is discussed at the beginning of the school year) and pupils respond to surveys to give their views.
Knowledge Organisers are produced half termly – these are on display and in children’s books so they have an idea of the learning journey to follow. Learning intentions are also posted to Dojo for parents to access and support learning.
KS1 pupils are immersed in the language through songs, stories and games/role play. Children learn greetings, colours, numbers, body and family members.
KS2 pupils build on knowledge from KS1 and further develop skills to confidently use:
We endeavour to have our children become proficient in essential skills such as recognising cognates, tone and correct grammar.
