Geography

Subject Leader Statement

At Broadmead Primary school, we aspire to give children a high-quality geographical education. As geographers, they will be able to develop their knowledge of significant places and locations, locally, nationally and globally. We aim to challenge pupils and provide an environment in which they can thrive from their learning and the challenges it produces.

Curriculum Intent

The intent of the geography curriculum at Broadmead Primary School is to inspire curiosity and cultivate a passion for understanding the environment and the diverse cultures within it. We aim to equip our young learners with the knowledge of geographical concepts, key locations, and the importance of sustainability, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the planet. Through engaging, practical experiences, students will develop essential skills such as critical thinking, exploration, and communication.

Curriculum Implementation

Assessment will focus on students’ ability to recall geographical facts (physical, political and human), ask insightful questions, and demonstrate an understanding of the local and wider world.

Geography is taught through the IPC scheme which enables children to approach learning by developing the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to confidently face the world of tomorrow. We have successfully integrated the IPC with the National Curriculum to ensure our pupils meet statutory requirements in a creative and stimulating way.

Students investigate local and global geographical features, drawing connections between their own lives and the wider world. Lessons are enriched through the use of visual aids, technology, and inquiry-driven exercises, promoting engagement and enthusiasm.

Curriculum Impact

We want the children to see Geography not just as written resources, maps and atlases, but as a way of exploring the amazing things around them. Wherever possible, our Geography curriculum is creative and enhanced by trips and visitors, as these bring the curriculum alive to our children and create lifelong memorable experiences.
